    RELATIONSHIPS

Conscious Loving. The journey from co-dependence to co-commitment. Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks, Ph.D. (Bantam Books, 1992).

Let go of power struggles and the need for control; balance needs for closeness and separateness; increase intimacy by telling the “microscopic truth”; communicate in a positive way that stops arguments; make agreements you can keep; allow more pleasure into your life.

At the Speed of Life. A new approach to personal change through body-centered therapy. Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks, Ph.D. (Bantam Books, 1993).

How to work with the body’s natural birthright – breathing and movement – to heal the split between thinking and feeling that keeps so many of us strangers to ourselves. Through dozens of dialogues and case histories we learn specific strategies for resolving longstanding conflicts, getting stuck relationships moving again, and even healing chronic physical symptoms.

The Dance of Intimacy.A woman’s guide to courageous acts of change in key relationships. Harriet G. Lerner, Ph.D. (Harper and Row, 1989).

Outlines the steps to take so that good relationships can be strengthened and difficult ones can be healed. MEDITATION/PEACE/MINDFULNESS

Peace is Every Step. The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life. Thich Nhat Hanh. (Bantam Books, 1992).

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him, a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to “mindfulness” – the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now.

The Art of Happiness. A Handbook for Living. His Holiness the Dalai Lama. (Riverhead Books, 1998).

Through conversations, stories and meditations the Dalai Lama shows us how to defeat day-to-day anxiety, insecurity, anger and discouragement. He explores many facets of everyday life, including relationships, loss, the pursuit of wealth, to illustrate how to ride through life’s obstacles on a deep and abiding source of inner peace. This book crosses the boundaries of traditions to help readers with difficulties common to all human beings.

Wherever You Go There You Are. Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life. Jon Kabat-Zinn. (Hyperion, 1992).

In this book, Jon Kabat-Zinn maps out a simple path for cultivating mindfulness in one’s own life. It speaks both to those coming to meditation for the first time and to longtime practitioners – anyone who cares deeply about reclaiming the richness of his or her moments.

Full Catastrophe Living. Using the wisdom of your body and mind to face stress, pain and illness. Jon Kabat-Zinn. (Dell Publishing, 1990).

Kabat-Zinn first explains how to develop a meditation schedule, and in later chapters pragmatically applies his plan to the main sources of stress. An impressive middle section clearly marshals scientific and anecdotal evidence relating state of mind to state of health. And while emphasizing meditation’s healing potential, Kabat-Zinn makes no sweeping claims, suggesting that the discipline serve not as a means but as an end.

A Year to Live. How to live this year as if it were your last. Stephen Levine. (Bell Tower, 1999).

Stephen Levine teaches us how to live each moment, each hour, each day mindfully – as if it were all that was left. Most of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore, laugh off, or deny the fact that we are going to die, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us, we will not feel that it has come too soon.

Conscious Breathing.Breathwork for health, stress release, and personal mastery. Gay Hendricks, Ph.D. (Bantam Books, 1995).

Conscious Breathing brings awareness to this core activity, which, like life, is enhanced and enriched by the application of consciousness.
